The Most Common Uses of Natural Gas

At Adams Gas, we’re fascinated by all things gas, whether it’s for commercial or domestic use. But what about the gases that are used every day, without us really considering them?

Natural gas is a composite of a number of different things, which can include the likes of helium, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, alongside its main component methane. These gases have extraordinarily diverse uses, but natural gas on the whole, and in its complete form, is used the world over for things we take for granted. Let’s take a look at these in more detail.

Heating

Natural gas is used to produce 80% of the UK’s heat resources, powering everything from ovens and stoves to tumble dryers and central heating. Boilers are the main user here, with newer models using their low pressure to great effect in heating the home efficiently.

Electricity

30% of the country’s electricity comes from natural gas, with most of our sources located in the North Sea. Though powered also by coal and some renewable sources, it remains the most significant component, in the form of shale gas. The government continues to buy and process the materials to allow for this, with demand remaining at an all-time high.

Industry

Natural gas is vital to our industry in the UK, with food and beverages leading the way for their usage at 20539 GWh in 2004, closely followed by mineral products and chemicals. Natural gas is also vital for fertilising crops, with the Haber-Bosch method being used to create hydrogen, combined in turn with nitrogen to produce ammonia.

Other Natural Gas Uses

In essence, natural gas provides the raw material that is the basis for a huge range of products that you will see everywhere. Whether through the production of plastics, agricultural products or fuel, natural gas is of utmost importance, and it will continue to be used to bridge the gap from fossil to more renewable fuel sources in years to come.

At Adams Gas, we have a wide range of products that use natural gas. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us for more information.
