Staying Safe with Gas in the New Year

The festive season is gradually coming to an end but there’s another holiday that is drawing closer; New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. This is a time where you can reflect on the year that has just passed and how you will go about the year to come. But it’s also a time where accidents can easily occur, so even though it is a holiday season, you need to make sure you are as safe as possible.

Make Sure You Haven’t Left Any Unnecessary Appliances On

One of the most common causes of incidents involving gas during the festive season and the end of the year is when people have accidentally left unnecessary appliances on that use gas, such as the oven, the grill, and the cooker. Is left unattended, the room in which the appliance is in can very quickly fill up with gas, which can cause suffocation and illness.

As such, you need to make sure that, once you have used any gas appliances, you turn them off completely or you turn off the gas supply; this should only really happen if you are going away for Christmas and you don’t want to create the risk of a gas leak within your house.

Follow the Correct Procedures if There is a Gas Leak

Because of the composition of gas supplies, it’s a lot easier to detect a leak now than it ever was before. As such, it is easy to recognise if there is a gas leak present within your house. If there is a gas leak, make sure that you follow the standard procedure to ensure the safety of yourself, your family, and your friends. As such, you need to do the following:

  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter – this ensures that the gas leak is stopped at the source
  • Open the doors and windows within the house – this enables the gas within the house to be circulated out of the house, being replaced with fresh air, and prevents suffocation
  • Do not use any igniting item – this includes matches, candles, cigarettes, lighters, electrical equipment, and even lights, as these could cause the gas within the house to ignite

Be Mindful of Your Surroundings

This is especially important around the festive period due to the various flammable objects that are around the house. For example, you need to be careful that you don’t have a Christmas tree near an open gas source that can ignite, such a gas fireplace or the cooker in the kitchen.

Therefore, you need to make sure that you don’t place any flammable objects near any of these types of environment. Christmas is also a time where people are using more candles, decorations, and lights. Because of this, make sure to not put any of these items near frequent gas supplies, such as within the kitchen, as it can be a health and safety hazard.

Get Your Appliances Regularly Services

This is important because, during the Christmas period, the gas appliances that are used on a regular basis will be used more frequently for things such as making the Christmas dinner. As such, you need to make sure that all the gas appliances, such as the cooker, gas fires, and any others, are regularly serviced and free of any possible gas leaks.
