Which Gas Do You Need for Plasma Cutting?
Plasma cutting uses an electrically conductive gas to transfer energy from a power source to the material being cut. The gas you need depends on what you are cutting:
- Compressed Air — The most versatile and cost-effective option. Suitable for cutting mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium up to 25mm. Ideal for general fabrication work.
- Nitrogen — Produces cleaner cuts on stainless steel and aluminium with minimal oxidation. The preferred choice when cut quality and edge finish are critical.
- Oxygen — Best for mild steel and carbon steel. The exothermic reaction increases cutting speed significantly, especially on thicker materials. Produces a smooth, dross-free edge.
