How to Tell If Your Gas Cylinder Is Almost Empty

Who wants their bottled gas to run out at inconvenient times? No one. Well, in this blog, we will cover aspects on how to check how much gas is left safely, to make sure that you don’t have to stop midway due to the gas running out, causing inconveniences.

Signs Your Gas Cylinder Is Running Low

There are some signs that you could look out for that indicate that your gas is running low, even before checking it manually, for example:

  • The flame might be smaller or weaker when using appliances
  • Burners are taking a while longer to ignite
  • A hissing sound that seems quieter than normal
  • Uneven or inconsistent performance

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, it is a good time to double-check your levels and consider getting a new or replacement one.

How to Check Gas Levels

Here are some safe and reliable ways you can check your gas level:

  • Warm water test: This is the most common test, where you pour warm, not boiling water down the side of the cylinder. Wait a few seconds, then feel it with your hand. The part that still contains gas will feel cool, while the empty section will remain warm. This trick works because the gas absorbs heat, cooling the metal where it sits.
  • Weigh the Cylinder: Gas bottles have their weight stamped on them, usually marked as “TARE” or “T.W.” This is the weight of the empty cylinder. Weigh the bottle on a scale and subtract the tare weight to estimate how much gas is left.
  • Use a Gas Level Gauge or Indicator Strip: Magnetic strips usually stick to the side of the cylinder, offering a rough visual indicator of gas levels. They work best when used consistently and can give peace of mind with a quick glance. Some cylinders come with a built-in gauge; if not, you can purchase a magnetic one.

Why Does Gas Seem to Run Out Faster in Colder Climates?

Gas bottles may appear to run out quicker in cold weather due to a range of factors, depending on how the gas is being used or stored.

However, if you’re using butane, cold temperatures can make things more difficult. Butane gas cylinders do not vaporise well in cold temperatures, so it may not even work, even when liquid gas is present inside. This is why many opt for propane gas cylinders instead in colder temperatures, as it remains effective even in freezing conditions.

Storage for Gas Cylinders

Storing your gas safely is crucial for your safety and those around you. Here are some safety tips to consider:

  • Store cylinders upright with the valve at the top
  • Keep them outdoors in a cool, ventilated area, never inside cupboards or sheds with poor airflow
  • Avoid heat sources and direct sunlight, which can raise internal pressure
  • Check for rust or leaks if storing for long periods
  • Make sure the valve is securely fastened when not in use

Storing your gas cylinders safely and securely can reduce the risks of accidents and prolong the life of your gas. View our full storage safety data sheets for a comprehensive guide to each gas.

Replacing Your Gas Cylinders

Don’t wait until the cylinder is completely empty to start taking action. If your gas is low and you have a busy trip coming up, plan ahead and replace or refill it early. So, how do you do it safely?

  • Make sure your replacement cylinder is clean, undamaged and clearly labelled
  • Double-check that all connections are tight and secure
  • Never attempt to refill a cylinder yourself. Check if your trusted supplier offers this service

If you use gas cylinders regularly, then keeping a spare one at home can be useful, especially during peak seasons or if you live in a remote area. Knowing when your gas cylinder is nearly empty is super important, and it doesn’t necessarily require any special tools. A little knowledge, like how to use the warm water test or making use of the tare weight, can save you from freezing nights and cold dinners. Pay close attention to how your cylinders are working, store your gas bottles accurately, and always prioritise safety when handling gas cylinders.
