Cylinder compliance

Cylinder Testing Requirements

Refillable gas cylinders must be periodically inspected and revalidated to stay safe and legal to fill. Here is a plain-English overview of cylinder testing requirements in the UK.

What this means for you

In practice

Pre-fill checks as standard

We inspect every cylinder before filling, so an out-of-test or unsound bottle never goes back into service.

Safe and legal to fill

Refilling only in-test, sound cylinders keeps you the right side of UK safety rules — no shortcuts.

Retest arranged with your refill

If your cylinder is out of date we can arrange revalidation or repair before refilling — no separate trip.

What testing covers

Why cylinders are tested

Transportable gas cylinders carry a stamped test date. Before a cylinder can be refilled it must be in test and in sound condition — that is why Adams Gas runs pre-fill checks on every cylinder. A periodic test typically looks at several things together:

  • External and internal visual condition (dents, corrosion, damage).
  • Pressure or proof testing where the cylinder standard requires it.
  • Valve condition and correct re-fitting.
  • Re-stamping with a new test date once a cylinder passes.
The essentials

What to check before you fill

  • Each cylinder shows its last test date stamped on the shoulder or neck ring.
  • Out-of-test cylinders cannot legally be refilled until revalidated.
  • Intervals vary by cylinder type and gas — always go by the stamp and current regulations.

If your cylinder is out of test, Adams Gas can arrange retesting or repair before your refill — see test dates explained.

If it is out of test

Getting a lapsed cylinder back into service

An out-of-test cylinder is not scrap — it usually just needs revalidating. Rather than sending you elsewhere, we can arrange the inspection and any testing it needs, then return it to service once it passes. Talk to us when you next bring it in and we will check the stamp for you.

What revalidation involves

Revalidation is more than a single check. A cylinder is examined inside and out, pressure or proof tested where its standard requires, and the valve is checked before the cylinder is re-stamped with a fresh test date.

  • Visual inspection for corrosion, dents and damage.
  • Pressure/proof testing per the cylinder standard.
  • Valve check and re-stamp on a pass; withdrawal on a fail.
How revalidation works

Getting a cylinder back in test

Check the stamp

Bring the cylinder in or ask at refill — we read the stamped test date to see whether it is still in test or due for revalidation.

Inspect and revalidate

If it is out of test we arrange the periodic inspection and any testing the cylinder needs, carried out to current UK requirements.

Re-stamp and return to use

A cylinder that passes is re-stamped with a new test date and put back into service, so it can be filled again. One that fails is withdrawn.

Frequently asked questions

Can you refill an out-of-test cylinder?

No — it must be revalidated first. We can arrange retesting before your refill.

What does cylinder testing involve?

Typically a visual inspection inside and out, pressure or proof testing where the cylinder standard requires it, a valve check, and re-stamping with a new test date. The exact requirements vary by cylinder type and gas.

How will I know if my cylinder is in test?

By the test date stamped on the shoulder or neck ring. We read it on every cylinder before filling, so if it is due you will not be caught out.

Who is responsible for keeping a cylinder in test?

In general the owner or user is responsible for not using a cylinder that is out of test. Check the stamped date and current UK regulations, and ask us if you are unsure.

Not sure if your cylinder is in test?

We check every cylinder before filling, and can arrange retesting if it is out of date. Talk to our team.
